WT11i/WT41 to WT11u/WT41u migration guide

On December 18th, 2015, Silicon Labs has announced discontinuance of WT11i and WT41 modules. EOL reason – components in BOM (power amplifier and antenna) became obsolete. However, there are new modules, which development has been finished – WT11u and WT41u.

WT11u is a drop-in, pin-to-pin compatible replacement for WT11i; WT41u is a drop-in, pin-to-pin compatible replacement for WT41. This concerns both its versions – internal “-i” and external “-e” antenna.

For both replacement variants:

  1. No hardware changes for PCB layout are needed. Footprint is exactly the same, ground planes extensions, clearance area, positioning at the PCB edge and other components around should remain the same. You may simply assemble the new module to your old PCB without any modifications.
  2. No software changes are needed – iWRAP software is exactly the same. This means that no modification for the host program is needed – all commands and functions will work in the same way as with the discontinued modules.
  3. Certification – similarly to the discontinued modules we will provide test reports and grants or declarations of conformity.

This means, that no additional effort (concerning both: hardware and software) is needed with the migration – you may simply take the new module (WT11u or WT41u), assemble it on your PCB and start the production.

The only difference is in iWRAP software version numbering in one case. Please take a look at the tables below, showing the difference:

Please be informed, that not all legacy firmware versions have been ported to support new modules, including regular releases and the ones created as customer builds. You might like to ask for a new custom part with your own custom or legacy firmware; for this purpose, please contact the Silicon Labs Support via the support portal at:

Please also remind, that any firmware is in the most part of it backwards compatible.

Hi,

This is Vipin here. I have purchased WT41u-A-AI56 module which is having an internal chip antenna.

Powered up the module and trying to access but not able to access through PC by USB/UART interface.

In UART I was expecting READY message but nothing came up.

How to interface this module to my PC? Which is the apt software tool to use? Simplicity Studio?

Can someone explain me in details the interfacing of the module? Only good news is that the buetooth module is listing in the phone.

Regards,

Vipin N N
