How can I obtain a USB PID?

Question:

How can I obtain a unique USB Product ID for use in my application?

Answer:

A USB Device is identified using two 16-bit numbers:

  • Vendor ID (VID)

  • Product ID (PID)

A VID must be ordered directly from www.usb.org and costs around $5000. When buying a VID you then get a range of 64k PID numbers.

PID from Silicon Labs

For customers who do not want to buy their own VID, Silicon Labs can sub-license PID numbers for free under our own VID. To obtain such a PID number, visit the following page and fill out the request form:

http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/pages/request-pid.aspx

NOTE: Products using the sub-licensed PIDs from Silicon Labs will not be eligible for USB Certification or use of the USB logo
